thank you for the memories. a while ago, i was in a search for the meaning behind a 21st birthday as i was deciding whether or not to celebrate it. what is it that is being celebrated ? n i think i found it.
.
the answer came in gradual waves to me as i relieved the memories formed during my past birthdays. the 2oth, 19th, 18th, 17th, 16th, 15th, 14th, 13th. my earliest memory is in the 16th, as i found handwritten cards from my friends. those moments just came alive all over again and i thought, its just sad how we allow those moments to slip past our fingers just like that. along the way, there were people who meant so much to me and sadly those bonds are no longer there now. it's the feeling of regret, for not keeping those friendships. that's makes the friendship that's still present now stronger and all the more precious. friends whom you grew up with. without those little writings to remind you of those moments, there is lil' meaning.
,
and so, what's the meaning behind a birthday celebration? for now, i agree that it is to celebrate the many happy years in your life thus far, with the people who made a difference, and who once meant so much to you, helped you along the way, and of cos, those that are still going strong with you now. it's looking back with an understanding.
.
every birthday calls for celebration with loved ones, to mark another year of togetherness, a display of appreciation and celebration that you have been thru another year with these people. also, birthdays are like special days of one person, an opportunity for people to show their love for that one person. just like valentines day is made for lovers to pour their love, or friendship days to mark friendships, birthday is a day to celebrate the birth of someone special , and for the person who came into the world, a day to celebrate the many blessings - the people who came into his/her life.
,
so.. why is the 21st birthday that bit more special? it probably marks the entrance into adulthood, a new beginning for another phase in life - the time to fight for dreams and seeing them realised. so for my 21st birthday, these are some things i hope to do:
(1) Look ahead at the road in front of me, now standing at 21 years old. ask myself, what is it that i can feel proud of when i am 30? 21 is like the final benchmark, 16,18, 21. and then freedom. to create the life i want. From 21, i will move closer to my life goals. unleash. let go.
.
what is it that i want in life?
.
(2) Thank the people who have entered my life where my earliest memory lies, 13 yrs. it's a pity that i have left my last 12 yrs behind. at least, when feelings are concerned.
(3) Remind myself to never take things for granted and be thankful for every little thing.
.
this year, many of us will be turning 21. i shall make the effort to wish the many friends ( those who used to mean something to me but whom i hav failed to keep up with) a blessed birthday and let them know how special they are. twentyone. a special number. the first step into another phase in life. out of teenagehood, inter early adulthood. of cos, this has to be in tandem spiritually.
.
so...now, how should i celebrate my day? i would really like to see those people whom ive met along the way. those groups of people that i havent made the effort to remember. but, there's just so many of them!!! going off to spend some thoughts on my friends now ...
